Acknowledgements
"Beyond Boosterism" was the work of many months and of many people.
Raymond McCausland's early interest and speculations were extremely valuable. He and
Gary Guthrie accompanied me on an exploration of the river bordering the Beeson league.
Dr. James H. Wooten, Buddy Wooten, and Nancy Wooten graciously allowed us to begin
our journey on the family ranch. Nancy Wooten, Bernice Etheridge, and the ladies of the
Dilue Rose Harris Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas provided needed
encouragement and invaluable sounding boards. Frank Steitz worked diligently to
illuminate William B. Dewees' life before his arrival in Texas. Jim Rutta of the Colorado
County Abstract Company, Major Victor Walter Weedn, Olga Poncik, Jim Kearney,
Anders Saustrup, Dr. Jesos F. de la Teja, Mark Goldsmith, and Bob Pickens provided
other indispensible assistance.
Raymond Metzke's recollections were brought into print largely through the
efforts of Myrah Jane Draper. Leslie Goldsmith and Jake Johnson provided the editor
valuable assistance in determining the date of the first oil or gas drilling in the corporate
limits of the City of Columbus.
Judge Paul C. Boethel and Dan E. Kilgore were most cooperative in assisting in
my investigation of Sally Scull's divorce. Harvey Vornsand, Bobbie Elliott, and Judge
J. Albert Pruett deserve credit for helping to transcribe the marginally legible writing in
Scull's answer to her husband's petition. Judge Boethel and Doug Kubicek were of
inestimable help in deciphering some of Jesse Robinson's land dealings.
